Scientific Entrepreneurship

In this interactive module, we evaluated the potential to use ventures as a vehicle to commercialise technology from the lab. We discussed what different roles one can play as an academic in such a venture, how to deal with tech transfer and IP rights and how to raise money and structure a deal. The culmination of this module is a ‘Dragons’ den’ style judging panel where participants will pitch ideas based on their research and get feedback from expert panel members. Topics covered include: -different business cases of academic ventures -academic entrepreneurship as a way of technology commercialisation -founding teams -how to protect your technology and the value of IP -finding sources of finance -communicating your business plan and early stage financing -presentation skills
